(Reuters) – The billionaire Winklevoss twins, founders of cryptocurrency company Gemini, have received a refund after their bitcoin donations to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign exceeded the maximum amount allowed by federal law, Bloomberg News reported on Friday.
Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, whose crypto firm reached settlements with U.S. and New York state financial regulators in February following allegations of wrongdoing, each announced donations of $1 million in bitcoin in posts on social media site X on Thursday.
Their donations exceeded the $844,600 maximum the Trump committee can legally accept per person, according to the report. The portion above that limit was returned to donors, the report said, citing a campaign official.
A Trump campaign spokesman did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The donations come as Trump has portrayed himself as a champion of cryptocurrency, including at a fundraiser in San Francisco this month with tech executives, during which he criticized Democratic efforts to regulate the crypto sector.
