Investing.com – OpenAI announced the formation of a new committee focused on “safety and security” as maker ChatGPT said it had begun training its next-generation artificial intelligence model.
In a statement, the Microsoft-backed group said the committee will be “responsible for making recommendations to the full Board of Directors on critical decisions regarding the safety and security of OpenAI’s projects and operations.”
The committee includes OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Chairman Bret Taylor, as well as directors Adam D’Angelo and Nicole Seligman.
The company said committee members will be tasked with evaluation and “further development.”[ing]“OpenAI’s processes and security measures over the next 90 days. At the end of this period, members will share their recommendations with the entire board of directors.
OpenAI, which faces increasing competition from companies such as Alphabet-owned Google (NASDAQ:) and Elon Musk’s xAI, is also trying to reassure lawmakers that it is committed to responsible AI development.
Former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, head of OpenaI’s Superalignment group, which seeks to ensure AI only completes its intended tasks, both left their positions earlier this month. The Superalignment team has also been disbanded, according to CNBC.
San Francisco-based OpenAI, which also said Tuesday that its latest artificial intelligence systems will “take us to new levels of capability,” said it “welcomes robust debate” around the safety of the nascent technology.
