(Reuters) – Fisker (OTC:) said on Wednesday it was recalling more than 18,000 vehicles in North America and Europe due to faulty software and failure to meet safety standards, the latest setback for the cash-strapped electric vehicle startup.
The Manhattan Beach, Calif.-based company is “voluntarily recalling” 11,201 Fisker Oceans in the U.S., Canada and Europe to address software issues that could cause the vehicle to enter a safe protection mode, potentially causing a loss of engine power.
It is also recalling 6,864 Fisker Oceans in the United States because they do not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) for instruments and warning symbols on the instrument panel display. It is also recalling 281 vehicles in Canada.
The startup plans to resolve the issues with an over-the-air Ocean OS software update by June 30.
Vehicles that have already been updated to the latest software version are not affected by the recall, he said.
The Fisker Ocean SUV, the only model currently in production, is being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for four safety incidents.
The latest investigation, announced last month, involves complaints of unintentional activation of the automatic emergency braking system.
