BRASILIA (Reuters) – A Brazilian Supreme Court judge decided on Thursday to close an investigation into Alphabet’s (NASDAQ:) Google and Telegram for allegedly coordinating their opposition to a bill aimed at combating fake news.
The bill, which is still pending, would require internet companies’ search engines and social messaging services to find and report illegal material, and would impose hefty fines for failure to do so.
In his ruling, Judge Alexandre de Moraes agreed with Brazil’s deputy attorney general, who said there was no basis to demand the opening of criminal proceedings against the two technology companies.
Last year, Moraes ordered an investigation into tech company executives.
