(Reuters) – Telecommunications company AT&T (NYSE:) said on Saturday it was investigating a dataset published on the dark web about two weeks ago, and said its preliminary analysis shows it affected approximately 7.6 million current owners. accounts and 65.4 million former account holders.
The company said the data set appears to be from 2019 or earlier. AT&T said it had no evidence of unauthorized access to its systems as a result of the incident.
The company said it is not yet known whether the data came from AT&T or one of its suppliers.
AT&T said the incident did not have a material impact on its business and noted that the source of the data was still being assessed.
AT&T is in contact with all those affected and has reset passwords for 7.6 million current customers. It also said it would offer credit monitoring wherever possible.
The wireless carrier’s 5G network covers about 290 million people across the United States.
In February, AT&T experienced an outage that interrupted calls and text messages for thousands of users in the US and prompted federal investigations.
